MacGillivray’s Warbler Nest – Photograph by SHARON BEALS

Sharon Beals is an incredible photographer and artist. A self-proclaimed ‘urban naturalist’ that was raised in Seattle and now calls Hunters Point Shipyard in San Francisco, home. Sharon uses photography as an art form, and as a way to chronicle what moves her heart and concerns her conscience from habitat restoration and plastic in the ocean, to the ecology of rivers, and of course, birds’ nests. In her latest hardcover book ‘Fifty Nests and the Birds that Built Them’, Sharon showcases her gorgeous photographs of nests accompanied by fascinating and informative portraits of the builders themselves.

The Sifter had the pleasure of chatting with Sharon to learn more about her work, herself and what other projects she is working on. Enjoy the beautiful sample of nest photographs below and be sure to check out Sharon’s official site for more photographs and…

A Turning of the Tides – Multiple Stations at the Pisces New Moon

Lovely! I am thoroughly enjoying this New Moon… Plunged deep into waves of sadness/grief/trauma yesterday… Shedding huge salty tears as I sobbed… scrubbing through old wounds… bubbling to the surface… ecstatic to be released… In the evening I was fortunate to share loving movement space with a large group of Cirque Folk… I worked through my personal misalignments until my Heart was OPEN… felt incredible to plow through the healing instead of continuing patterns of avoidance… Truly grateful to experience what OPEN feels like…. lighting up all the nooks and crannies… full exposure… LOVE!

virgo magic

pisces Saturday’s New Moon in Pisces (12:00 am Pacific) is punctuated by a pile-up of planetary events, a major shifting of energies . Four planets (appear to) change directions within a week, and the rare abundance of stationary – apparently motionless – planets recommends rest, reflection and retreat.

Mercury was the first planet to make the switch, from Retrograde (backwards) to Direct (forward) early this morning. Since February 6, Mercury Retro invited you to rethink your future vision, re-inspire your imagination and reconnect with your intuition. Perceptions and ideas that were submerged beyond the reach of your conscious mind now erupt into awareness – instant intuitive downloads, changes in perspective, and new possibilities for moving forward.

The Pisces New Moon is a time to re-source yourself in the deepest truth of who you are – infinite, eternal, divine. Pisces is the last sign of the Zodiac, where everything dissolves back into…

The Birth Project

‘The Birth Project’ is Amanda Greavette’s current series. The paintings are life-size and include images of women in pregnancy, labour and birth, and postpartum. These images are an astounding tribute to the potent grace that comes through the act of birth. I am completely blown away by Amanda’s uncanny ability to capture the raw power, ecstasy and spirit of new mothers.

From her website : Amanda believes strongly in the power of the image to shape our perceptions and beliefs. Painting is the last great traditional medium, and she feels that little compares to the impact a large oil painting. Amanda cares deeply about women’s issues, particularly birth and motherhood, and paints from that passion. The Birth Project is because of and for women; it seeks to tell their stories while providing an image of birth that is both symbolic and real; depicting the raw power of the birth process and the unfolding potential of a woman. Amanda feels these paintings have a place in the public sphere where they can provoke conversations about birth and choices, conjuring emotional responses and encouraging storytelling. Amanda loves to hear about how the paintings affect the viewer- whether it be waterbirth conversation in a midwife’s office, or the recognition of capability when a mother finds herself birthing in the same position as the ‘woman in the painting’, or the healing someone finds when seeing her experience reflected. The Birth Project.”

Hey it’s JUST the Sun

“Yes, my wife is JUST a mother. JUST. She JUST brings forth life into the universe, and she JUST shapes and molds and raises those lives. She JUST manages, directs and maintains the workings of the household, while caring for children who JUST rely on her for everything.”
